Rates will vary based on the type of project. The services below reflect sample rates for fiction manuscripts that require standard levels of editing. Please reach out to me with details about your specific project and timeline so I may determine an accurate quote.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last step in the publishing process to check for basic errors.  This is a one-pass edit to correct grammatical errors and misspellings but is not intended to be a comprehensive reworking of the text. Proofreading is the final opportunity to catch surface errors that may have been missed by your editor or added during revisions, so you should not submit your manuscript for proofreading unless it has already been edited. This service is ideal for clients that need a final set of eyes before publication.

Copy Editing

Copy editing involves a more comprehensive reworking of the text. Here, the editor corrects grammatical and cosmetic mistakes, but also checks for accuracy, consistency, style, and overall flow. The editor looks for inconsistencies and ambiguities in the timeline and may suggest alternate wording or adjust phrasing when appropriate. For manuscripts that require heavy copy editing, the editor may rework full lines or paragraphs to enhance the flow. This service includes one full pass of your manuscript. Following copy edits, a proofread is strongly suggested.

Content Editing

While copy editing focuses on the mechanics of writing, content editing—or developmental editing—focuses on the story itself. The content editor looks for plot holes, problematic characterization, pacing issues, and other substantive problems that hinder the author's goal for the story. The editor works with the author to cut, reshape, revise, or create content to enhance the story and may advise deleting or rewriting large sections of the manuscript. This service is suggested for authors who need help with direction, vision, and style. Since the emphasis during this stage of the editing process is solely on storytelling, a content editor is not focused on grammar.  As such, copy editing and proofreading are strongly suggested after content edits are complete.
